Developing an effective Safe Schools / Emergency Plan (6 hour course)


Course Description:


This course provides K-12 school administrators, safety coordinators, and other stakeholders with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop effective safety and emergency plans tailored to the unique needs of their schools. Through a combination of lectures, interactive exercises, and discussions, participants will learn how to assess risks, establish protocols, and implement strategies to enhance the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors during emergencies.


Course Objectives:


  1. Understand the Importance of Safety/Emergency Planning: Recognize the critical role of safety and emergency planning in K-12 schools and its impact on the well-being of students and staff.
  2. Navigate Legal and Regulatory Requirements: Familiarize oneself with relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines governing school safety and emergency planning at the federal, state, and local levels.
  3. Conduct Comprehensive Risk Assessments: Learn how to identify and assess potential hazards, vulnerabilities, and threats specific to the school environment, including natural disasters, medical emergencies, and security incidents.
  4. Establish a Safety/Emergency Planning Committee: Develop strategies for forming and facilitating a multidisciplinary planning committee to guide the planning process and ensure representation from key stakeholders.
  5. Develop Emergency Response Procedures: Create comprehensive emergency response protocols, including evacuation procedures, shelter-in-place protocols, lockdown procedures, and communication strategies.
  6. Implement Communication and Notification Systems: Design effective communication and notification systems to disseminate critical information to students, staff, parents, emergency responders, and the broader community during emergencies.
  7. Design and Conduct Training and Drills: Develop training programs and conduct regular drills to familiarize staff and students with emergency procedures, assess preparedness, and identify areas for improvement.
  8. Establish Resource and Support Networks: Identify external resources, partnerships, and support services available to schools during emergencies and establish protocols for requesting and coordinating assistance.
  9. Maintain and Revise the Safety/Emergency Plan: Establish processes for maintaining, reviewing, and updating the safety/emergency plan regularly based on changes in regulations, best practices, and school demographics.
  10. Put the Plan into Action: Implement the safety/emergency plan during real-life incidents, evaluate response efforts, conduct post-incident debriefings, and identify lessons learned for continuous improvement.

By the end of the course, participants will have training and knowledge to develop a comprehensive safety/emergency plan tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of their K-12 school, ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors.

All students with be provided with the necessary tools to create, revise, and implement a comprehensive Safe Schools / Emergency Plan for their school or school district.
