K-12 School Safety and Critical Incident Training (6 hour course)


Course Description:


This comprehensive training program is designed to empower K-12 school employees with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively prepare for and respond to critical incidents in educational settings. Through a blend of theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and case studies, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of response procedures, decision-making frameworks, threat assessment strategies, and emergency response best practices.


Course Objectives:


  1. Response to Critical Incidents: Understand the nature and scope of critical incidents that may occur in K-12 schools, including natural and mechanical disasters, suspect initiated events, medical emergencies, security threats, and acts of violence.
  2. Understanding Response Procedures: Familiarize oneself with established response procedures and protocols for various critical incidents, including evacuation, lockdown, shelter-in-place, and reunification.
  3. Critical Incident Decision Making: Develop skills in critical thinking and decision-making under pressure, including prioritizing actions, assessing risks, and allocating resources during emergencies.
  4. Identifying Possible Threats and Indicators of Violence: Learn how to recognize potential threats and warning signs of violence in the school environment, including behavioral cues, social media activity, and physical security vulnerabilities.
  5. Emergency Response Best Practices: Explore best practices for emergency response planning, communication strategies, resource management, and coordination with emergency responders and external agencies.


By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to enhance their preparedness for critical incidents and respond effectively to emergencies in K-12 school settings, ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors.
