K-12 Family Reunification Training (6 hour course)


Course Description:


This course provides K-12 school personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively implement family reunification plans during emergencies or critical incidents. Through a combination of theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and case studies, participants will learn about the key components of reunification planning, logistical considerations, and communication strategies essential for facilitating the safe and efficient reunification of students with their families.


Course Objectives:


  1. Implementing a Reunification Plan: Understand the importance of having a reunification plan in place and learn how to effectively implement it during emergencies.
  2. Key Components of the Reunification Plan: Identify and analyze the critical elements of a reunification plan, including roles and responsibilities, communication protocols, and logistical arrangements.
  3. Evacuation Location Considerations: Evaluate various factors to consider when selecting an evacuation location for reunification purposes, including accessibility, safety, and capacity.
  4. Off-Campus Reunification: Explore strategies and procedures for conducting reunification at off-campus locations when on-site reunification is not feasible.
  5. Transportation Logistics: Develop logistical plans for transporting students to reunification sites, including considerations for vehicle availability, routing, and supervision.
  6. Parent Staging Area: Establish a designated staging area for parents and guardians to receive information and instructions during the reunification process.
  7. Communication with Staff and Students: Develop communication protocols to ensure that staff and students are informed and prepared for reunification procedures.
  8. Communication with Parents and Guardians: Learn effective strategies for communicating with parents and guardians before, during, and after the reunification process, including updates on the situation and instructions for reunification.
  9. Reunification Logistics and Setup: Plan and organize the logistics of the reunification process, including signage, registration procedures, and security measures.
  10. Reunification Team Roles and Responsibilities: Define the roles and responsibilities of reunification team members, including incident commander, parent staging area liaison, logistics team , security team, transportation team, student supervision team, parent check-in team, student release team, and crisis counseling team.
  11. Facilitating the Effective Release of Students to Parents/Guardians: Develop protocols for verifying parent/guardian identities, releasing students safely, and providing support to families during the reunification process.


By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to confidently lead reunification efforts during emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and families within K-12 school communities.


All students with be provided with the necessary tools to create, revise, and implement a comprehensive Family Reunification Plan for their school or school district.
